I got some news and it was expected. The year was 1990 something. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went into remission then it came back and she passed away. My mom’s sister also had the disease around the same time. Fast forward to the early 2000s, I begged my then doctor for a mammogram or some sort of screening. I didn’t get one. Today had a consult over the phone. I have a 35% chance of getting breast cancer. I am not trying to send it out into the universe but it’s math so. This precentage is high according to the person who did my consualtion. I will be testing for the cancer gene hopeful this Friday. Not me but someone will be drawing blood. Why am I spilling my guts? You’ve never met me. I have never met you. I guess so you can understand why I am fascinated with certain themes. Family Matters, I wrote because I didn’t feel grounded. All was right with my world when my mom was alive. I Love You X’s Infinity, I wrote because I was struggling with the idea of accepting myself as a writer. I wondered if my mom would be happy that I was struggling this much. I wrote Who Killed Athena Wainwright because of my need to know what happens after death. Is my mom watching over me?
