BY A NOT SO FAMOUS AUTHOR

I was looking through my shelved work today and I started thinking about how I got here. A long time ago in a far off place called New York. No. LOL. I actually went to 2 conferences in a year to learn and get better at writing. Honestly, though some of the best feedback I got was from my past editors and some of the agents who rejected me. I got the worst advice, in my opinion, at these conferences. The 1st was read in your genre to see what’s out there. If I had done this and someone accused me later down the road of copying or mimicking another author, I would be guilty. Guilty as SIN. No matter how careful I was, that author’s style or an idea may bleed into my work. To this day, I don’t read in my genre. I think this is 1 of the reasons why my style is so unique. I am not the only Sonya Watson in the world. I Facbooked my name way back when and there are a lot of Sonya Watsons in Australia. I do know that I am the only Sonya A. Watson who has an unhealthy love for cake, who runs, bakes and watches an insane amount of Kdramas and Cdramas. Currently watching, Scent of Time, Sleep and Doona. Don’t get me wrong. I do read. I read Shakespeare. I’m not trying to be like OH look at me I read Shakespeare for fun. Not at all. I enjoy the rhythm of his work and his ability to rhyme. I don’t typically give out advice when it comes to creating or promoting art. Because, I know I started a sentence with because I’m going to English Purgatory, what works for me may not work for you. All I can say is be you and write what you want to write the way you want to write it. Art is subjective. Creating something that represents you is more important. Making a living from your art is also important but staying true to yourself is equally important.
